Rain Walking (Winter 1992)

Today I ventured out and took a walk
Without umbrella in the pouring rain -
An experience quite different from
Watching fat drops roll down a pane.

The latter is merely a passive act
Without any feel for the wet and the cold,
But the former is pure excitement,
And the storm was a sight to behold.

I cared not for my hair - it was pulled neatly back,
And my jeans were sloppy, as were my shoes,
Enabling me, with light-hearted abandon
To completely enjoy the refreshing deluge.

I was swept away with exhilaration,
Which for me is a feeling quite rare
And I smiled to see all the bobbing umbrellas
Of the people who just wouldn't dare.

A jaunt in the wet is not for everyone,
But we rain-walkers have our reasons -
Which is why we are gladdened, while others may mope
At the start of a good rainy season.
